The Russian Leather Vertical Wallet is handcrafted with the beautiful and famous reproduction of the historical Russian Leather by England’s J & FJ Baker. An elegant design that provides a slim and classic look.
Russian Leather was popular in 17th – 20th century Europe being made in book binding, leather goods and luxury furniture makers. The superb tanning method made the leather highly durable and strong. The birch oil applied to the leather made the leather weather, mould and insect resistant. The leather ceased production during the Russian Revolution and the closely guarded recipe was lost. In 1973 divers discovered the 1786 shipwreck The Metta Catharina. A large amount of the Russian leather on board remained preserved despite being under the sea for nearly 200 years. Soon after, a prestigious tannery J & FJ Baker with the help of experts spent six years studying the original Russian Leather to reproduce leather that smells and handles like the original Russian Leather.
